Why do we lose our perfect posture?
How The Dorn Method can help you with poor postural problems.
Young children have something that adults no longer possess, and that something is Perfect Posture. Why is this? Why do we lose the ability to hold ourselves more upright as we get older?
Young children learn lots of things from their parents but when it comes to the basics like sitting, walking and picking up objects, children beat us adults hands down.
Consider how a young child sits, then gets up and walks across the room to pick up his/her favourite toy. Nine times out of ten this will be an example of perfect posture in action. They do this without thinking about it, they do it naturally. So we go back to the question, 'Why do we lose our perfect posture'?
Well it looks as though it all starts to go downhill from the time we go to school.
School may begood for our learning, communication, socialisation skills and brain development, but not so good for our posture.
It is at school where we tend to see young children loaded up, carrying big, heavy bags to and from school every day. When they finally get into school, children sit for quite long periods, hunched over their school work on chairs that may not give the correct support.
As we grow, we put even more stress and strain on our spine by the way we do things. Teenagers, for example, sit at games consoles for hours on end in hunched and twisted up postures, when they walk they often hold their head down and slightly forward with rounded shoulders.
We carry these bad postural habits with us into our adult lives and we carry on putting the pressure on too, lifting heavy objects, sitting at computers or holding the phone on our shoulder with neck bent, and sitting with our legs crossed whilst in the office at work or at home. We do it all the wrong way by bending and twisting our spine in all directions. Yes, the spine is meant to bend and twist and is a wonderful piece of engineering, but it is supposed to also last a lifetime. This just won't happen without taking proper care and thinking carefully about how we do things. Back pain is the most common complaint in our modern world but in less well-developed countries, the occurrence of back pain is a fraction of ours. We have cars to jump into whenever we want to go anywhere and lovely designer furniture to sit on.
We also have the best medical care and yet we are still suffering from this problem. And it's getting worse.
The Dorn Method was developed over 40 years ago in Germany and is a drug free therapy for treating back and joint pain in people of all ages.
The Dorn Method has the same goals as Osteopathy and Chiropractic but is much gentler in it's approach and has no heavy thrust movements. It has been developed to help re-align the skeletal system of our bodies and help to restore balance. By doing this and releasing tension and stress, it helps not only our spine but also our nervous system.
Standing with bad posture can overstretch the spinal ligaments which also can cause stiffness and backache.
Have you ever taken a careful look at yourself in a full length mirror?
And I don't mean in the changing room at your favourite clothes shop in that fancy new shirt or dress. Just take a moment to look at the way you stand and hold yourself.
Getting to know yourself is an important step, educating yourself about good posture is vital and could prevent you getting back pain in later life.
We may not be able to get back that perfect posture we had as a child, but we can do something about looking after ourselves more as we get older and to educate our children on how to look after their spines. The way to do this is through the Dorn Method which along with it's self help exercises is the way forward in Back care today.
