Get off on the right foot...

Get off on the right foot with The Dorn Method

This month, we are taking a look at leg length differences, and how The Dorn Method tackles this problem head on with stunning results.

The Dorn Method has been correcting people's leg length differences for nearly 40 years with very simple movements that are relaxing for the client and very effective too.
The Dorn Method always bases it's treatments on the correction of unequal leg length, making sure that we have a stable core to work with. The problems many people face with unequal leg length are lower backache, hip, knee and ankle pain, even scoliosis. The latter would be an effect of the spine bending to try and keep the body in an even upright position as the pelvis is no longer level, causing in many cases continious back pain. By keeping an even leg length you are making sure that not only the spine and pelvis are aligned you will also be de-stressing the hip, knee and ankle joints also.
This is not as hard as you may think but does require a little self discipline from the client.
It takes less than five minutes each day to do.
Have you ever found yourself walking down the street placing one foot down harder on the pavement than the other? I know I have. And when I had checked my leg length it was definitely because I had one leg longer than the other. That's where the beauty of The Dorn Method comes in.
A registered Dorn Method Practitioner can help you with this re-alignment, and then show you how you can do this yourself safely at home with The Dorn Method's unique self help exercises.
Most people who have unequal leg length end up with wedges in their shoes to try and make up the difference, but with Dorn you don't have to. The obvious and only way The Dorn Method cannot make a difference to leg length would be if you were born with a major defect or the result of surgery or an accident made the difference.
But normally Dorn can help with most leg length discrepancies.

This medical study information was from the Science Daily website
Unequal Leg Length Tied to Osteoarthritis, Study finds Science Daily (Mar 31, 2010)
A new study shows that arthritis in the knee is linked to the common trait of having one leg that is longer than the other. Whether or not the leg length differential is a direct cause of Osteoarthritis is not clear, but the findings may allow people to take preventative measures before the onset of the chronic and painful condition.

The Dorn Method is one of those preventative measures YOU can take.
To help restore balance to your body  and relieve the pressure from the spine, hip and other areas due to leg length differences, don't you think it may be a good time to check out The Dorn Method?
Dorn not only helps to correct but also helps to educate.

Don't Get The Hump!

Don't Get The Hump!

Take a look at your posture...

Have you ever been told when you were younger by your mum to sit up, don't slouch! Stand up right! Keep your head up! Sound familiar?

Well, we all think we know better when we are younger and dismiss this advice in an instant as just plain old nagging!
But as we get older we soon find out that we say the same to our kids, and yes we get the same reaction too, kids will be kids! But in today's modern society we should take notice a little more to what we are being told about our bodies if we want to live a pain-free, healthier life.
Pressures on the upper part of our spine can cause us not only Back pain but Neck pain, Headaches and Shoulder pain etc. Being hunched over a desk at the computer all day without sitting in a chair that gives us proper support is not very good at all.
You should take regular hourly breaks and have a bit of a stretch with your hands above your head as if you had just got out of bed. This not only stretches the spine, but also relieves some of the stress that has built up in the upper back (thoracic area).
Without sitting properly you could end up getting the 'HUMP' quite literally, as you find yourself slouching at the desk, shoulders and head move forward, pressure builds and the upper part of the spine curves. All the muscles will tighten and hold the spine in this position, and if you happen to have a vertebrae out of place the muscles will not allow it back into it's rightful place. This could end up causing other problems later on elsewhere in the body, as the messages to the brain and other organs get blocked.
By visiting your registered Dorn Method Practitioner once a month they will be able to not only release this pressure on the upper area of the spine and help you overcome 'getting the hump', they will also be able to release the stress of our everyday living that has affected the other parts of your body too, such as joints etc. Once your practitioner has managed to align your spine you will be shown a few simple self help exercises to keep yourself in alignment.

Why do we lose our perfect posture?

(This is my latest Publication in Choice Health Magazine Jan/Feb 2013.)

Why do we lose our perfect posture?

How The Dorn Method can help you with poor postural problems.

Young children have something that adults no longer possess, and that something is Perfect Posture. Why is this? Why do we lose the ability to hold ourselves more upright as we get older?

Young children learn lots of things from their parents but when it comes to the basics like sitting, walking and picking up objects, children beat us adults hands down.
Consider how a young child sits, then gets up and walks across the room to pick up his/her favourite toy. Nine times out of ten this will be an example of perfect posture in action. They do this without thinking about it, they do it naturally. So we go back to the question, 'Why do we lose our perfect posture'?
Well it looks as though it all starts to go downhill from the time we go to school.
School may begood for our learning, communication, socialisation skills and brain development, but not so good for our posture.
It is at school where we tend to see young children loaded up, carrying big, heavy bags to and from school every day. When they finally get into school, children sit for quite long periods, hunched over their school work on chairs that may not give the correct support.
As we grow, we put even more stress and strain on our spine by the way we do things. Teenagers, for example, sit at games consoles for hours on end in hunched and twisted up postures, when they walk they often hold their head down and slightly forward with rounded shoulders.
We carry these bad postural habits with us into our adult lives and we carry on putting the pressure on too, lifting heavy objects, sitting at computers or holding the phone on our shoulder with neck bent, and sitting with our legs crossed whilst in the office at work or at home. We do it all the wrong way by bending and twisting our spine in all directions. Yes, the spine is meant to bend and twist and is a wonderful piece of engineering, but it is supposed to also last a lifetime. This just won't happen without taking proper care and thinking carefully about how we do things. Back pain is the most common complaint in our modern world but in less well-developed countries, the occurrence of back pain is a fraction of ours.                                                                                                                       We have cars to jump into whenever we want to go anywhere and lovely designer furniture to sit on.
We also have the best medical care and yet we are still suffering from this problem. And it's getting worse.
The Dorn Method was developed over 40 years ago in Germany and is a drug free therapy for treating back and joint pain in people of all ages.
The Dorn Method has the same goals as Osteopathy and Chiropractic but is much gentler in it's approach and has no heavy thrust movements. It has been developed to help re-align the skeletal system of our bodies and help to restore balance. By doing this and releasing tension and stress, it helps not only our spine but also our nervous system.
Standing with bad posture can overstretch the spinal ligaments which also can cause stiffness and backache.
Have you ever taken a careful look at yourself in a full length mirror?
And I don't mean in the changing room at your favourite clothes shop in that fancy new shirt or dress. Just take a moment to look at the way you stand and hold yourself.
Getting to know yourself is an important step, educating yourself about good posture is vital and could prevent you getting back pain in later life.
We may not be able to get back that perfect posture we had as a child, but we can do something about looking after ourselves more as we get older and to educate our children on how to look after their spines. The way to do this is through the Dorn Method which along with it's self help exercises is the way forward in Back care today.
